New Work / Editorial & Posters

Brand Journalists asked me to illustrate two articles recently. One on multiple franchise owners and another on franchises that fail.  I also had a chance to illustrate three inspirational posters for their offices.  Many clients should consider creating posters or fliers of various images from their newsletters and blogs. They look great in an office setting and can even be used as giveaways to clients.  Please click on images to enlarge.

New Work

I love my job and the surprises that it entails. I never know what a client will be asking for
and to me that's where the excitement comes in. All my work starts with a pencil sketch and from there it can go in two directions....traditional or digital. Traditional to me is usually ink and watercolor with the occasional oil or acrylic and digitally it starts with ink and then colored in photoshop.
Here are a few examples of both. Clients include: BrandJournalists.com, Jeff Grissler, Tribune Services and Flying Horse Media.
Hope you enjoy them. Please click on image to enlarge.

Bad Clip Art & Blogs...Stop the Madness!!

You went over your latest blog entry the night before and have spent a good deal of the morning going over it yet again. It looks great! Content is to the point and entertaining. You feel that soon you will be attracting the advertisers necessary to perhaps turn this into an actual full-time profession.
All you need now is a strong graphic to enhance and brighten up your page.
An hour later you are still searching for that photo or clip art that can support your post and it's content. Time is tight as you still have laundry to do, some shopping, dishes and make it on time to your second shift job which you put up with but simply hate more every day.

Ah, the heck with it! This piece will look fine...click!  Congratulations, you have just wasted all that hard work for nothing. Picking cheap and run of the mill clip art just lessens the integrity and importance of your subject matter. A professional illustrator like myself or other professional illustrators, can create an illustration that is totally unique to you and your blog.
In many cases a simple graphic will cost you the same or even less if you commission an illustrator as opposed to buying clip art. Free? Well, anything free comes with a cost, either in content or karma. You pick.

Shown here are two simple samples showing bad and good art of the same subject matter.
Also shown is a more conceptual piece done on the subject of farmer's and their crops which I did for a client. These were done quickly and within a very reasonable budget. There are many illustrators like myself who offer a number of images per month with a fee that is within your budget.
If you want to be taken seriously and on a professional level then I am afraid that yes..."It takes money to make money" and that is how you will attract advertisers and generate the capital to eventually quit that second shift job that you simply put up with.

Markers...Still A Great Medium

During the 60s,70s & 80s felt markers were a staple in the advertising industry.
This wonderful medium was used to sketch out ideas and comps for various clients from Coca Cola to Chevrolet.
They are still used today, perhaps to lesser degree than in decades past, but there has been a renewed interest in this creative tool over the past few years and many illustrators and designers are once again
pulling out there markers and pads and setting aside there iPads to explore this classic medium.

Retro Sells!

Retro sells. Simple as that. Those iconic images from the 40s, 50s & 60s strikes a nerve for a large demographic which cannot be ignored. Young people, the middle aged and seniors all enjoy the fun and simplicity of this approach to graphics.
So, when you are looking to impress a client and all you are looking at are a series of graphs, pie charts and row after row of colored columns containing enough data to to fill a second garage, think about utilizing some custom retro graphics. They are fun and informative at the same time.

And we all want business to "be fun!"

MarketingTips....

These are quick pencil sketches each illustrating a marketing tip.
I have added some spot color to one. Full color images always grab attention but when going with
a simple message, using a light cartoon style with just one or two other colors makes a big impact.

It's all about making the message memorable and fun so the reader and client will be wanting more and more and more....
